Più forti insieme: percorsi di empowerment e inclusione finanziaria per le donne del Red Sea State
Il 15 aprile 2023 si è aperto uno scontro, sfociato in guerra civile, fra l’esercito regolare del Sudan (Sudanese Armed Force – SAF) e le forze ribelli delle Rapid Support Forces – RSF. Il conflitto ha causato una importante crisi umanitaria in tutto il paese che ha generato lo spostamento interno di circa 6 milioni di sfollati interni (Internal Displaced People – IDPs) che, sommati ai 3 già presenti a causa dei precedenti conflitti in Darfur, fa sì che a febbraio del 2024 l’OIM (Organizzazione Internazionale per le Migrazioni) stimasse oltre 9 milioni di sfollati interni su una popolazione di poco più di 40 milioni di abitanti. A questi si aggiungono 1,1 milioni sudanesi rifugiati nei paesi confinanti, soprattutto Egitto, Sud Sudan e Chad, e al contempo circa 960.000 rifugiati di altri paesi presenti in Sudan (principalmente da Sud Sudan e Etiopia). In questo momento il Sudan ospita il più alto numero di minori sfollati interni al mondo.
Una delle aree di accoglienza di questi sfollati è lo stato del Red Sea, la cui capitale è Port Sudan, all’est del paese, affacciata sul Mar Rosso, dove sono arrivati in questi 11 mesi circa 250.000 persone (14 febbraio 2024, fonte OCHA).
In questo contesto, Associazione Microfinanza e Sviluppo e PASED (Port Sudan Association for Small Enterprise Development) realizzano un programma si sostegno ai gruppi di risparmio e credito gestiti da donne della città. Si tratta di un’attività che nasce da una precedente collaborazione con PASED, che nella regione offre attività di accompagnamento e formazione a questi gruppi, oltre alla gestione di un fondo rotativo che incrementa le risorse che le donne hanno a disposizione per i prestiti che vengono fatti ai membri del gruppo.
Il progetto Più forti insieme: percorsi di empowerment e inclusione finanziaria per le donne del Red Sea State (Sudan) propone tre attività principali:
- Identificazione e sensibilizzazione delle comunità e delle associazioni di donne
- Progettazione e realizzazione di 3 moduli di formazione per i 250 membri delle associazioni femminili
- Sostegno alle piccole attività generatrici di reddito attivate dalle beneficiarie
On April 15, 2023, a conflict erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF), escalating into a civil war. This conflict has led to a major humanitarian crisis across the country, displacing approximately 6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs). When combined with the 3 million IDPs already displaced by previous conflicts in Darfur, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimated in February 2024 that over 9 million IDPs exist in a country with a population of just over 40 million. Additionally, 1.1 million Sudanese have taken refuge in neighboring countries, mainly Egypt, South Sudan, and Chad. At the same time, Sudan is hosting around 960,000 refugees from other countries (primarily South Sudan and Ethiopia). Currently, Sudan has the highest number of internally displaced children in the world.
One of the regions receiving these displaced people is the Red Sea State, whose capital is Port Sudan, located in the east of the country along the Red Sea. Over the past 11 months, approximately 250,000 people have arrived there (as of February 14, 2024, source: OCHA).
In this context, the Microfinance and Development Association, together with PASED (Port Sudan Association for Small Enterprise Development), is implementing a program to support women-led savings and credit groups in the city. This initiative stems from a previous collaboration with PASED, which offers support and training to these groups in the region, in addition to managing a revolving fund that increases the resources available to the women for loans within the group.
The project “Stronger Together: Empowerment and Financial Inclusion Pathways for Women in the Red Sea State (Sudan)” proposes three main activities:
- Identification and awareness-raising among communities and women’s associations
- Design and delivery of 3 training modules for 250 members of women’s associations
- Support for small income-generating activities initiated by the beneficiaries
